Working checklist covering structural, mechanical, ADA, and safety items for school bleacher annual inspections. Use it in-house or to brief your contractor.
Why Annual Bleacher Inspections Matter
School bleachers are inspected against multiple overlapping requirements: the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, IBC Section 1108 for assembly seating, AAHPERD recommended practices, and applicable state athletic and building codes. A documented annual inspection protects students, reduces liability, and surfaces deficiencies before they become injuries.
For a deeper look at the requirements involved, see our guides on ADA compliance for athletic facilities and the 2025 Bleacher Inspection & ADA Compliance Checklist.
What BROC Inspects
Structural Integrity
Frame welds, support columns, anchor connections, bracing, and load-bearing components inspected for cracks, corrosion, and fatigue.
ADA Compliance
Accessible seating positions, companion seats, accessible aisles, and route compliance verified per the 2010 ADA Standards.
Handrails and Guards
Height, spacing, anchor strength, and continuity of handrails and guardrails per IBC Section 1014 and 1015.
Tread and Riser Geometry
Step dimensions, nosing condition, and surface traction inspected. Worn or non-compliant geometry creates trip hazards.
Telescopic Drive Systems
For retractable bleachers: motor function, drive belts, locking mechanisms, interlock systems, and emergency stops tested under operational load.
End Caps and Gap Closers
Spacing between rows, gap closer condition, and end cap integrity inspected. Open gaps are the leading cause of bleacher injury claims.
Bench and Footboard Condition
Surface wear, splintering, fastener tightness, and rot or corrosion inspection on every accessible row.
Documented Report
Every inspection produces a written report with photos, deficiency severity ranking, and corrective action recommendations suitable for insurance, risk pool, and capital planning use.
